The pioneer of emerging business development area aspires on settling service design in Finland
Satama Interactive, a leading digital services company barks about one of the hottest topics in intersection of digital services and industrial design – service design, a fresh business development area yet to be portrayed and capitalized in Finland. Satama has been one of the driving forces in developing this rapidly blooming business area and introducing it in Finland with a range of partners such as live|work, Wataniya Telecom, Forum Virium, Nokia Research, Movial, University of Art and Design and Design Forum.
What on earth is service design?
Service design [Fin:“palvelumuotoilu”] acts as an important business
tool in creating enhanced business potential. It enables an effective
way for product oriented companies to reinvent themselves and for
service oriented companies to shift their offering on a completely new
level.
“To put it short, service design combines [digital] services and industrial design innovations. Basically, both areas meet in service design. Few examples of successful service design innovations include a familiar household product of Apple iPod and iTunes service by Apple. Other similar cases are Wataniya Telecom’s retail experience and digital marketing services planned and implemented by Satama and Streetcar’s ‘City Car Club’ – a strategy to shift from ownership to use by LiveWork. We are thrilled to be in the Finnish front line anchoring the service design concept in here as well” says Kari Aalto, Business Development Director at Satama.
Service Design Seminar loaded with exciting sub-events and service design masterminds’ speaker sessions
Service Design Seminar, organized as a part of Helsinki Design Week
exhibition, offers an excellent opportunity for raising awareness of
this concept throughout the country.
Mikko Jäppinen, Senior Designer at Satama is one of the service design devoted authorities in Finland: “Seminar offers a platform to discuss emerging fields of service design in the light of superb cases from different markets. Also, announcing the Service Design 2007 competition and the eminent competition jury is going to be one of the event highlights not forgetting the first ever Pecha Kucha night in Finland.”
Participating in the seminar offers plenty for all. Leading world visionaries in the field tell how business is transforming from product desire to service envy. Nokia and Satama will showcase how they designed a product and service concept for pets and pet owners. Forum Virium’s Elukka Eskelinen explains the audience how Eurovision 2007 contest becomes a service design supported experience.
“We hope this is a start for a service design era in Finland - not only
for companies like ourselves or Nokia. There’s a rapidly growing need
for professionals on this area and therefore we have taken an active
role on getting the service design focused education started in the
Finnish educational authorities such as the University of Art and
Design,” comments Jussi Kivipuro, Sales Manager at Satama.
